Conscious Sedation

Please see this useful video clip explaining what to expect from your conscious sedation experience at Crabtree Road, by Kings College Hospital

What is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation techniques are a way of making anxious people feel more relaxed about receiving dental care. There are several techniques to help you overcome your fears and anxieties. Not all are suitable for everyone. The dentist who sees you at your assessment appointment will discuss the different options and help you decide which is best for you.

Conscious Sedation does not mean you are asleep.  You would be asleep with General Anaesthetic, which is carried out in a Hospital Environment.

At Crabtree Road Dental Practice, we offer both:

i) IV Sedation - involving a cannula placed into the back of the hand administering a drug which relaxes you

ii) Inhalation Sedation - happy/sleepy gas, inhaled through a plastic bobble which sits gently over your nose

What types of procedures can I have under Conscious Sedation?

Depending on your treatment plan, you can undergo Sedation at Crabtree Road Dental Practice for simple restorative procedures, such as fillings, crown preparations, or gum treatment, or more complex surgical treatments such as Implant placement, or tooth extractions.

Your dentist will go through the anaesthesia options with you.

Are there any contraindications to conscious sedation?

Your Dentist will explain to you if there is any reason you may not be eligible for Conscious Sedation. However if you are extremely immunocompromised, it may be safer for you to be treated in secondary care. Other contraindications may be pregnancy, obesity or compromised ability to consent.

You must also be able to bring an escort with you to take you home from the procedure and stay with you for 24 hours until you're fully recovered.

How much does it cost?

The cost of Conscious IV Sedation at Crabtree Road Dental starts from £250, plus the additional cost of treatment.
